Description: Discover a former Gilded Age estate high in the heights of Manhattan with Isle Of New York Tours’ Fort Tryon Park walking tour. Begin your journey as an elevator whisks you 140 feet up through solid bedrock. Ascend to 250 feet above the Hudson River valley for stunning views of a Catholic convent, the Hall of Fame for Great Americans in the Bronx, and the Tappan Zee Bridge in Westchester. From the highest natural point in Manhattan, on a clear day you can see up to 20 miles to the north and east! This Gilded Age tycoon’s estate in 1900 was transformed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. into a public 67-acre park. Explore a 1776 Revolutionary War battle site, and a memorial to the first woman who fought for the USA. View the medieval-style Cloisters museum while navigating the park. Please make sure your footwear is broken in for urban trekking. AFTER THE GREAT FIRE OF 1776 WALKING TOUR: TOWNHOUSES, TENEMENTS AND TOWERS

Description: About a third of Colonial New York was devastated from Whitehall Street to beyond St. Paul's Chapel west of Broadway in the Great Fire of 1776. Townhouses would even be built on landfill beyond the original shoreline of Greenwich Street. View three of them, including one converted into a Syrian Church. By the middle of the 19th Century, tenements and industrial buildings would transform this former wealthy neighborhood, as it became home to many diverse immigrant groups. See the Downtown Community House with its 100 years of community service. Fifteen nationalities were counted at its opening in 1926. Starting in the 1940s, two acts of eminent domain to build the Battery Tunnel and the World Trade Center would destroy the unique vibrant neighborhood. Celebrate 250 years of Manhattan's Lower West Side history with Joe Svehlak, whose family lived here over a century ago.

During the war, the Bronx contained vital crossroads leading to and from New York. The area saw fighting as Washington’s army and later other patriot forces tried to maintain control of the area. We’ll discuss the role the area played in the war and visit several key sites fought over by the opposing sides.

Manhatta before the Revolution: The Lenape, The Dutch and The British

Description: We will walk along the Hudson River, discussing Lenape life along what was then known as the North River and Henry Hudson's exploratory journey.
Next we will visit The Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in the Alexander Hamilton Customs House. In addition to being a landmark inside and out, this is the home of the Museum of the American Indian containing a display from the authors of "Manhatta" featuring a map of Manhattan that changes in front of your eye when you tilt your head to reveal the island before the land was developed or the land as it is today.
This will be followed by a walk along historic Stone Street, then a short walk up to Wall Street where the tour will conclude.
