Richard has given over 50 walking tours, bike tours, bus tours, and lectures of Astoria and Long Island City since 2004, and has assisted with 20 Forgotten New York tours given by Kevin Walsh since 2011.

Richard Melnick was born in Brooklyn, NY just after USAF pilot Francis Gary Powers and his U-2 spy plane were shot down over the USSR in 1960.
Melnick grew up in Nassau County and graduated from St. John’s University with a BA in political science. He served in the US Army in seven states and in West Germany in the 1980s.
Richard has been on the Greater Astoria Historical Society board of trustees since 2003, serving as president from 2006-2010. He has helped write 3 of the 6 GAHS books and has contributed research, fact-checking and proof reading to all GAHS published articles.
A licensed NYC Sightseeing (Tour) Guide since 2011, Mr. Melnick has also kayaked along the East River and NYC area waters over 20 times since 2004. He is privileged to have been in the New York Times three times, having been featured in 2008 as a night Doorman/Historian.
His specialties are the Astoria/LIC waterfront, the Hell Gate and the East River, and numerous LIC districts and neighborhoods.
