FAQs

Q. Can a non-member attend a GANYC meeting?

A. Yes, in fact, attending a monthly meeting is the best way to know about our organization.  All licensed guides are welcome at our meetings, so be sure to bring your license and we will be pleased to give you more information in person at the next meeting.

At some meetings we have lively discussions about things affecting our members or tourism in the city; at others we have authors or speakers talk to us about their areas of expertise.  Check the calendar a few days before the meeting to confirm the date and location.

Q. The GANYC application says I need two GANYC members to sponsor me as well as their letters of recommendation.  How can a newly licensed guide obtain such sponsorship?

A. By attending meetings, you will get to know some of our members, and if you present yourself in a positive and professional manner, you should have no trouble getting two members to sponsor you.  Introduce yourself and get to know your fellow guides; we are a friendly group!

Q. What are the benefits of membership?

A. As a GANYC member, you will have access to the Members Area of our website, allowing you to interact and get advice from a large group of highly experienced and knowledgeable NYC tour guides. You may attend and participate in our monthly meetings, as well as vote for, or run to, become a member of the GANYC Board of Directors. You may also attend the numerous events and exclusive FAM tours arranged for GANYC members only, as well as our specialized Professional Development Classes.  Most of the events, FAM tours, and classes are free or there is a modest fee.  You will also have access to the Job Postings where outside vendors look for qualified guides - like you! Please keep in mind, GANYC is NOT an employment agency, however, one of the best ways to get work is to have people know who you are. By joining GANYC and participating in our meetings and events, people will come to know you and they may recommend you or even hire you. Remember, just making one contact through GANYC can repay the cost of your dues many, many times over!  In addition, GANYC makes Liability Insurance available to its members.  For many people, this valuable coverage alone is reason enough to join.

Q. Does GANYC have a code of ethics or a constitution?

A. Yes.  You must agree to abide by the “Members’ Code of Ethics” in order to join our organization and must understand the “GANYC Constitution.”
